Finding Ways To Keep Up With

Working at Heights and Using Fall Protection Safety Harnesses

People who are working at heights deal with the issue of falls as the major sources of fatalities and injuries. People who are at most risk of falls are those who use ladders and climb up fragile surfaces like roofs. Around the world, thousands of workers go through mild to major injuries because of falls associated with working at heights. Unfortunately, there is also the common occurrence of deaths from falls. Your safety is an important thing when you are working at heights or know of someone who does.

There are different ways to ensure the safety of workers who are working at heights. Primary fall safety measures include the proper inspection and planning of the job site. Using adequate and functional personal protective equipment is also vital. The use of fall protection safety harnesses is one of the most common personal protective equipment options for people at risk of falling. Unfortunately, many people take the use of construction safety harnesses for granted. Some only come to realize of their value when things are already too late and they fall down but are still lucky to be alive.

A construction safety harness is an important element of personal fall arrest systems. In case of a fall, the use of this equipment helps the user maintain a suspended upright position. You also get proper support from them as you wait for rescue to arrive. Using a full body safety harness is crucial in any fall restraint system. It prevents employees from reaching areas of the job site that falls may take place. Making a body belt a construction safety harness is not always a good recommendation. When falls happen and you only have this belt as you safety harness, the forces will be directed at your abdomen. With a full body harness, though, the forces will be evenly distributed throughout your body. Your benefit for this will be minimizing the occurrence of minor to major injuries for falls.

Although fall protection safety harnesses are created to provide safety from falls for workers, they may not do so if you fail to wear them right. Though you have a variety of safety harnesses to choose from, you have to understand that there are general steps that you can follow to properly wear one.

When you hold the harness using the back D-ring, make sure that you shake it so that all straps will fall at the right places. If the straps on the waist, chest, and leg are already buckled, you should release the straps then unbuckle them. You then proceed to slip the straps over your shoulders. From this point, you will find the D-ring resting at your back just in the middle of your shoulder blades. Before connecting the leg strap to the opposite end, make sure to pull it between your legs. You do the same procedure for your other leg. If your construction safety harness has a belt, connect it to the waist strap.
